During this time, restaurants are prioritizing the health and safety of restaurant staff, customers, and delivery partners. Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we’ve listed some important best practices on prioritizing hygiene inside and outside of the kitchen.

  • Practice good hygiene: Remind employees to clean their hands thoroughly and often by using an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Protect yourself: Encourage employees to cover their hands with disposable gloves and their nose and mouth with a face cover during their shifts. Face covers are meant to protect you and other people in case any one of you is infected. Remind your staff to also be conscious of keeping a distance of 6 feet between one another, as a face cover is not a substitute for distancing.
  • Take care of yourself: Ask employees to stay home if they feel unwell. If they have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, encourage them to seek medical attention.
  • Take precaution when interacting with customers and drivers: If you deliver your own food, remind delivery drivers to use their insulated delivery bag (and to frequently disinfect it) to transport the diner’s food from the restaurant.

You can also offer the option of contact-free delivery to your customers, which requires delivery drivers to leave a customer’s order in a designated area (outside a door or in a lobby) and simply contact the customer via phone when their order has arrived. Grubhub is currently offering contact-free delivery by default and has curbside pickup functionality available for our restaurant partners for both drivers and customers to limit interaction.

Remember–never touch a customer’s food with bare hands and be extra aware of following proper hygiene procedures when in restaurants. For customer confidence, be sure to tie or seal delivery and to-go orders.

Use your best judgment when interacting with your delivery drivers, customers and your employees.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely, but encourage you to stay informed on the latest updates from authorities such as the CDC and the World Health Organization by visiting their websites.
