Madame Vo

How Madame Vo reached new customers with Grubhub

Husband and wife duo Chef Jimmy Ly and “Madame” Yen Vo opened Madame Vo in 2017 with a mission to share the southern Vietnamese food they grew up eating.

When they first opened in New York City’s East Village neighborhood, only a handful of contemporary Vietnamese-inspired restaurants were around. They believed their menu, featuring an assortment of recipes passed down from both sides of their families, would become a success.

“Growing up in New York City, it was always hard to find restaurants offering the Vietnamese flavors we had at home.” Ly explained to US Magazine, “I would travel to Houston, L.A., or even Philadelphia for good Vietnamese food. Our entire concept was just to serve recipes we grew up with, with the same bold flavors we grew up with.”

Madame Vo’s bold menu has garnered attention from celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Calvin Klein, and Philip Lim. That success has translated from high-profile celebrities to impressive accolades by media outlets. Vice dubbed Ly as the “Vietnamese Noodle Master,” and Hyerbae listed Madame Vo as one of the 11 best Vietnamese restaurants in New York City for pho.

When the pandemic hit in early March 2020 and New York City shut down indoor dining, Ly and Vo, like all restaurateurs, quickly adapted their restaurant strategy to add additional opportunities to generate revenue. “As a restaurant with a small physical space, we knew especially with the pandemic and closure of indoor dining that we would need to focus on expanding our customer footprint,” commented Ly and Vo.”That’s why we turned to Grubhub.”

Reaching new customers with Grubhub

To bring in additional revenue, Ly and Vo reconfigured their restaurant strategy to include takeout and delivery and to also broaden their customer base. To do so, Ly and Vo signed up with Grubhub for Restaurants and listed their menu on the Grubhub Marketplace. “Grubhub made it easy to sign up,” said Vo, “We were set up and were sending orders out the next day.”

Since Madame Vo has joined the Grubhub Marketplace, the restaurant’s customer base has grown and takeout and delivery orders have generated additional revenue for the business.

Delivery has been such a lifeline for us throughout the pandemic, and Grubhub has the customers and infrastructure to help grow that.

Building brand awareness through delivery and takeout

Grubhub has also helped them build brand awareness for their restaurant and expand beyond the East Village, which has resulted in a loyal customer base. “We were able to reach a broader range of customers,” said Vo, “A lot of customers are now frequent customers.”

Ly and Vo are truly resilient restauranteurs who quickly adapted their restaurant strategy to overcome the pandemic’s challenges. Through their partnership with Grubhub, they reached new customers, broadened their customer footprint, and generated additional revenue through takeout and delivery orders.
